SNOW!

Oh…it has been wonderful! It’s been snowing on and off since Thursday! We are loving it! Friday, it was amazing…enormous snowflakes…it was so beautiful to watch!  And today the boys are raring to play, play, play! To an amazing Saturday…wish Daddy were here to enjoy it! (It should still be here by the time he gets back on Monday from the US.)

Now for the boys….

ABZ 002

Our three amazing boys…happy as can be! Wearing the hand knitted hats Mommy made them!! (Monster, R2D2 and a Fish)

ABZ 005

Oh yeah…and the scarves Mommy made them…:)

ABZ 006

Landen was so funny! The snow “stuck” to the bottom of his boots making him have “platforms”! He was like 2 inches taller! We couldn’t stop giggling!!

ABZ 007

Not a “common” site in all our years living in Houston! Getting more and more common here, especially THIS year! We have gotten LOTS more snow than last year.

ABZ 010

The boys had a blast! It took lots of convincing to get them to come in. They played outside for about 2 hours! And were not phased by the cold one bit! They were very resourceful…using empty cans and jars from our recycle bins to try to build things out of the snow…like you would with a pail at the beach! My engineering sweetie would be so proud! They also had tons of fun making snow angels all over the garden. :)

   ABZ 009

I think they succeeded in “touching” in one way or another, EVERY bit of snow in the garden! What a great day!

‘Til next time….God bless!

Our Burns Night!

Well, today is the day… the 251st birthday of Scotland’s beloved national bard, Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796).

It is a well celebrated occasion here…Many people were tartan today to celebrate their Scottish heritage and Burns. So, we have donned our tartan today…soaking up every moment of living in this amazing place!

There have been tons of Burns Suppers held all over the country from the end of last week through the weekend. Mark and I attended our formal one on Saturday night. Tonight, as Mark is in Houston on business, it is just the boys and I for dinner. But I decided to make this a fun occasion…their very 1st Burns Supper…Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties…yum!

ABZ 021

Here it is…Haggis, Neeps (turnips), Tatties (potatoes) and carrots as our other veg.

ABZ 020

To think about how many people are preparing this same traditional Burns Supper tonight is just wild! The grocers have huge supplies of them and even set them up in special displays. I was at Tesco Danestone the other day and their “Burns Night” display included Scottish flag and bagpipe music being played…:)

ABZ 022

Ahhhh…the Haggis!

It was all quite easy to prepare. The neeps and tatties are peeled and cut in medium chunks, then boiled (in separate pans) until fork tender. Then I added a little butter, milk, salt and pepper to the potatoes and butter, salt and nutmeg to the neeps, mashed to the consistency I wanted. The haggis, being premade, was very easy. It went in the Aga for 1h45min…steaming and smelling wonderful when it came out. Served it all up and topped with a light herby beef gravy. Now at most of the formal adult Burns Suppers, like our this past Saturday, the gravy is a wonderful whiskey gravy! YUM! But I skipped that with the boys… As you can see, I also skipped the carrots since I thought it was perfect as is.

ABZ 026And there you have it! Scottish Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, all eaten in honour of Robert Burns!

The boys absolutely loved it and all of them had second helpings…:)

What a fun “Birthday” celebration!

Trevor’s 8th Birthday!!

I cannot believe Trevor is turning 8 years old! It has gone by so quickly! He has such a big personality for his age…and ,really, always has!

Let’s step back in time for a second… These are all before his 1st birthday!

Jewelry 007

Check out his “fangs”….it was so cute to see him bear his pearly whites…even though he didn’t have many!

Like I said earlier…BIG personality for a little person! I still giggle at this photo…:)

Picture 025

So sweet and innocent! Only he can make a soft toy box look good as a hat! :)

Okay, back to the present…Trevor had specific ideas for his birthday celebration. He wanted his best friend, Jake, to sleepover on Friday night and have a Costume Birthday Party on Saturday! What great ideas! And so it was planned…with Ben10 as the theme, as Trevor is all about Ben10 right now!

Here’s Trevor and Jake, after a fun night of playing Ben10 together and having homemade pizza for dinner…all smiles! Just before his friends were going to arrive, we surprised him with this…

The guests soon arrived and the fun began…They seemed to be really enjoying being dressed up!  There were Ben10 characters, Darth Vader, Storm Trooper, Alien, Skeletons, Cleopatra, Fairies, Princesses, etc….what a fun idea Trevor had! A real hit with the kids!  We had Ben10 playing on the TV as background, played Twister (which was a HUGE hit), had an egg race (plastic eggs…I am not that insane!), pinned the Omnitrix on Four Arms, had grilled hot dogs, cheese balls, and grapes, then had cake and ice cream…and finished it all with the opening of presents! It was a really great time and went by really quickly… some photos of all the fun…

Getting ready to “pin” the Omnitrix on Four Arms… For those not versed in “Ben10 speak”, the object was to get their white circle closest to the four armed figure on Ben10’s watch (called the Omnitrix) on the big poster. SDC11721

We were all giggles…the kids were purposefully “misleading” their blind-folded buddies away from the target! :0 There were some kids that were so spun around they were headed out the breakfast room door!!

Burns Supper

Wow, it’s already time for OUR 2nd Annual Burns Supper! I can’t believe we have been here over a year and a half! They say time flies when you are having fun!

001

Here is our invitation to this festive event!

003

It was held at Ardoe House, which is worth noting, as it is a beautiful venue.

Ardoe house - day Ardoe House – dates back to 1878. It was the mansion home of a wealthy Aberdeen merchant. Its design was inspired by Balmoral Castle, the official residence of the Royal Family. Some believe it is haunted??

The Hotel has a white lady ghost who is thought to be Katherine Ogston, the wife of Alexander Milne Ogston who was a soap merchant, who purchased the mansion house in 1839. There is a portrait of Katherine on the main stairs and this is where her ghost has been seen.
Others have reported that the ghost is a daughter of a former owner who was raped and became pregnant. She later killed herself and her child.

The “believing” part is up to you…;)

ABZ 017

Mark and I ready to leave…just waiting to be picked up.

ABZ 016     Notice Mark’s tartan bow tie? He also has the cuff links and I have the matching stole/shawl. We had them made by a Tartan Shop in Glasgow. It is the Ancient Royal Stewart tartan, which is the tartan of the royal House of Stewart and it is also the personal tartan of Queen Elizabeth II.  There are hundreds of tartans…I chose this one because it is VERY “Scottish”, as it is one of the oldest tartans on record and has so much history to it!

**********

Burns Suppers have been a part of Scottish culture for over 200years! They are held in honour of Robert Burns, Scotland’s best-loved and national Bard. They are a night to celebrate his life and works.

Robert Burns was born on 25th January 1759 in Alloway  Scotland and died on the 21 July 1796. Even though his life was short, the impression he made on the people of Scotland has been long lasting!  The first recorded Burns Supper was in Alloway in 1801, when a group of his friends gathered. It was not held in January, as they are now, but rather in July, marking the 5th anniversary of his death. Some of the traditions that grew up from that very first Burns Supper~ haggis as the main course and whiskey with which to mark the many toasts! The haggis was “addressed” at that very first meal, after all, Robert Burns himself provided the perfect words with which to do so in his poem “Address to a Haggis”.

Here is a link to the poet’s original version of that poem and along side is modern English translation.

http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/translations/address_to_a_haggis.htm

The experience of a true Scottish Burns Supper is fantastic! It is filled with such pride and tradition. I have a video to give you a “taste” of this great event.

First the Haggis is “piped in”…

Then the Haggis is “Addressed”….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8l2m3_2Xjg

There are several toasts, obligatory speeches (which are great fun to hear, full of humour, as Burns would have loved) all in Burns’ appreciation before the meal begins. They are “The Immortal Memory” of Rabbie Burns (as he is referred to often), “To the Lassies”, “Response from the Lassies” and, finally,  the “Selkirk Grace”.

Some hae meat and canna eat;
And some wad eat that want it:
But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thankit.

*****

The meal is full of tradition, too! Haggis, neeps and tatties is what it is all about! And if you are wondering, yes, we have had haggis and we really like it!  The haggis, accompanied by champit tatties and bashed neeps (mashed potatoes and turnip/swedes), can be either the main course or the starter.

The menu at our Burns Supper:

Arbroath Smokies Pate with oatcakes

Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, with a whiskey sauce

Angus Beef with Rumblethumps (potato and cabbage – real yummy!) and veg

I think the name of our dessert was a Tipsy Laird, but I can’t remember.

This was all washed down (at varying intervals) with great wines, liqueurs and fine Scottish whiskey! The meal is closed with tea, coffee and tablet, a traditional Scottish sweet made from sugar, condensed milk and butter….very good!

The reciting of “Tam O’Shanter” is a frequent occurrence at Burns Suppers, as it was done at ours. It was written by Burns in1790 and is accepted as one of his finest works and one of the greatest narrative poems in the language. Even though it is a long poem, the “performance” of it is captivating. There is great history to his works. He drew on his childhood memories of people, places and stories told, while living in Ayr on the west coast of Scotland.

Here is a link to the original and a modern English translation of Tam O’Shanter. The site also has lots of other great information on this legendary poet.

http://www.robertburns.org.uk/Assets/Poems_Songs/tamoshanter.htm

Even though you may be thinking…”wow, I never heard of this guy” or “What has he written that I know?”….  Well, the formal part of the evening is brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” – a song which is known around the world! It is actually a Scottish Poem written by Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song.

Here is a neat bit of “Auld Lang Syne” explanation. I think you’ll enjoy it…includes fact and humour. Take a peek…

http://www.worldburnsclub.com/newsletter/auld_lang_syne_what_about.htm

The evening also includes a Ceilidh, which is traditional Scottish dancing. It is SO much fun!! Once again just brimming with tradition! FUN!  One of my favorites is Strip the Willow.

You have to trust me on this..it really is VERY fun! :)

Well, there you have it, a lesson on a Scottish Burns Supper! I hope it gave you a feel for the real thing. If you ever get the chance to attend one, I highly recommend it! We had great food and great fun! We are already looking forward to next year! God Bless!
